- ➤ Veterans in RI can join a VA Providence study on PTSD—participants will schedule interviews and an MRI scan and receive $150 total while a free humanities course for veterans begins Sept. 25 via Zoom. Several future events include 9/11 remembrances on Sept. 11, a veterans barbecue in Pawtucket on Sept. 13, a veterans café and benefits expo in Westerly on Sept. 17, and Operation Stand Down RI events in Johnston on Sept. 18–19. - ➤ On July 26, in a Smithfield parking lot near Roots Heaven Farm, about 20 young people watched a staged arrest when State Trooper Ruth Hernandez and motorcyclist Bruce Cirliss acted out an encounter as part of Lights & Sirens International’s bocce outreach—aimed at starting talk between police and youth. The event taught simple lessons on handling strong feelings and rules, and similar events were held nearly 25 times over six summers. The Providence Journal

- ➤ The Rhode Island League of Women Voters is barred from registering new citizens at naturalization events due to a new federal policy issued Aug. 29 that limits voter registration services to state and local election officials—after nearly two years of assisting new citizens at the USCIS building in Johnston, the group plans to challenge the rule. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On August 27, the FDA approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for 2025-2026 and shipments have begun so high-risk adults—including those 50 and older—can get protection; the new ACIP will meet later this month to update vaccine recommendations. Go Local Prov
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island FC lost 1-0 to Louisville City FC at Centreville Bank Stadium after Aiden McFadden scored from the right wing— the team defended well but had few chances to score. They will face Indy Eleven on Saturday to try to boost their playoff hopes and prepare for a Jägermeister Cup semifinal on Wednesday. The Providence Journal
- ➤ On Saturday night, Bishop Hendricken defeated North Kingstown with a 12—3 win in high school football at Perry Athletic Complex despite heavy rain, with Isaiah Brito throwing two touchdown passes and Jeremy Seidi scoring an 82—yard drive action play. The teams will meet next week as the Hawks visit Cranston West and Bishop Hendricken travels to Connecticut to play Killingly. The Providence Journal
- ➤ On Saturday, the Bryant Bulldogs rallied from a 20-10 halftime deficit to beat UMass 27-26—Brennan Myer threw key touchdowns and Bryce Soli kicked the game-winning field goal. The Rhode Island Rams also staged a comeback to defeat Stony Brook 31-17, with quarterback Devin Farrell leading a 24-point drive for their second straight win. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Four Rhode Island high school football teams played out-of-state games Friday that count in the standings and offered lessons for the season. La Salle secured an overtime win against Boston College High — Pilgrim edged Seekonk while Westerly and Central suffered narrow losses, with coaches saying the tough contests will prepare their teams for upcoming games.
