COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a Saturday fire burned down Tiger Eye Gift Shop on West Shore Road in Warwick, firefighters contained the blaze and owner Ronald Amore said his beloved cat is missing. The shop will host a fundraiser with music, a comedy show, and a raffle on November 1 from 4-8 p.m. while investigators work to determine the fire's cause.  ABC 6

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early this morning, firefighters responded to a car fire on Melissa Street that spread to a nearby home's sunroom and siding, but they quickly controlled the blaze so no one was hurt.  ABC 6

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, in Kent County Superior Court, Warwick resident Heather Costa faces a trial calendar call for allegedly providing false information and illegally selling a firearm linked to a 2024 murder-suicide in Haverhill—where 24-year-old Loren Marino was shot before her partner died by suicide.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rhode Island will commemorate 9/11 as local groups honor 38 victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks with planned services at two sites. The ceremony at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery—set for Thursday, Sept. 11 from 9 to 11 a.m.—will include a reading of names, bell strikes and other tributes while a separate event at Oakland Beach will mark the moment the North Tower collapsed.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly half of Rhode Island’s 48 public libraries are run as 501(c)(3) nonprofits, a legacy of 19th century reforms to expand free reading. In Providence, two nonprofit systems share city funds to provide the same library services across branches—ensuring every reader gets equal access.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island League of Women Voters was banned from registering new citizens at naturalization ceremonies after a new federal policy limited these services to state and local election officials—leaders believe the change aims to control who votes. Former co-president Nina Rossomando said the National League of Women Voters is planning legal action—claiming the rule makes it harder for new citizens to exercise their rights.  Rhode Island PBS

  • Escobar's Highland Farm in Portsmouth was named Rhode Island's best pumpkin patch by Reader's Digest—offering a pick-your-own pumpkin patch and an 8.5-acre corn maze with hay rides, a kids cow train, and a Halloween costume party on Oct. 31. The patch opens Sept. 20 and the maze starts on Sept. 26, running Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Columbus Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The Providence Journal
