BUSINESS NEWS

  • Phed Phed, a new Thai restaurant, will open this winter from 2025 to 2026 at 71 Washington Street in downtown Providence and join the existing Tori Tomo space. It will serve lunch and dinner six days a week and offer authentic Thai dishes such as Tom Kra Zaap Chicken + Crispy Papaya Salad developed by Chef X and his team.  Downtown Providence
  • The Diversity Business Exhibit returns to Providence this weekend and will open on Friday at the Rhode Island Convention Center, offering business tables and panels that support diverse entrepreneurs + build new skills for local organizations.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Providence School Board President Tyrelle Stephens reported that local control of the schools will return at the end of June 2026—professional development is 98% complete, community goal setting is 92% done, and the monitoring step will finish by December with a more detailed report coming in January.  ABC 6
  • Brown University engineers showed that a jiggling camera can be used with a clever algorithm to create super-resolution images sharper than those from a steady shot— their study may lead to improved photography methods for both scientific and consumer applications.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Helena Foulkes launched her campaign for governor on Tuesday and vowed to fire the DOT director and the education commissioner, raise taxes on the wealthy, create an inspector general post and add extra funds for RIPTA. She aimed to challenge Governor Dan McKee and warned House Speaker Joe Shekarchi to explain his stance if he runs.  The Boston Globe
  • On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Rhode Island Ethics Commission heard public comments on proposals that would either raise the gift cap for lawmakers or close a loophole for lobbyists—prompting calls for clearer rules. The panel will accept written feedback until Sept. 16 before meeting again to decide on possible rule changes.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Union workers said the DCYF building was unsafe after three bat sightings in August led to a weeklong closure and technician Michael Brooks found bat droppings, raising health concerns before a lease renewal decision is made. The public hearing has been postponed as building manager Ron Varone and union members urge state officials not to renew the lease & await further air quality test results.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Matthew McDermott announced his candidacy for the vacant Ward 2 Providence City Council seat after Helen Anthony resigned to focus on her health; the special primary will be held on November 4 and the general election on December 2 with other candidates including David Caldwell and Jeff Levy.  ABC 6
  • Rhode Island’s T.F. Green airport terminal will get a $64m makeover starting early spring that adds new seating and a 60-foot-tall water feature—replacing the old information desk and sailboat display as part of a long-term update to boost capacity and modernize the facility. The project will finish in late 2027 and aims to give tourists a world class gateway to the Ocean State.  The Boston Globe

  • The Providence Journal named 11 underclassmen who show strong skills and promise to be Rhode Island’s next big high school football stars—players like Cumberland’s Conner Beaudreault and St. Raphael’s Johnathan Germain are expected to make big plays in upcoming seasons.  The Providence Journal
  • Shea and Tolman high schools have merged their football teams into Pawtucket as a new co-op that ended old rivalries and won 26-12 at Max Read Field last Friday — the team now prepares for its next game at Moses Brown on Saturday. Key players Angel Lopes and Emmett Talaray led the win — and the program aims to grow as plans to unite the schools under one high school move forward.  The Providence Journal
  • Brown women's basketball will open their season on November 7 at Belmont—after three road games, the Bears will hold three sets at Pizzitola Center before facing Ivy League teams and tougher conference rivals in upcoming contests.
