- ➤ Rhode Island media companies have cut jobs with buyouts, firings, and retirements reducing newsroom staff from over 500 to about 125, and ABC6, the Providence Journal, and RIPBS were all affected — moves that followed consolidation trends by Sinclair and Nexstar. Go Local Prov
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Brown University will host a 21st Century Orchestra festival from Oct. 24 to 27 at the Lindemann Performing Arts Center in Providence—featuring performances by a Grammy Award-winning orchestra and local Community MusicWorks with free concerts, ticketed panels, and artist presentations. Music faculty led by Eric Nathan organized the event to showcase new works composed by faculty and graduate students and to record the performances for public release. Brown University
- ➤ Secret Mall Apartment is a documentary that tells the story of artists who built a secret living space inside Providence Place mall in 2003. The film, which used the artists' own video and played at Providence Place Cinema 16, is available today on digital platforms — including Amazon, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google Play and YouTube. 10 WJAR

- ➤ A URI poll of 500 residents shows that 93 percent of Rhode Islanders view housing costs as a problem—65 percent say it is a big issue—and nearly one-third have fallen behind on utility bills or rent in the last three years. The Boston Globe

- ➤ Brown University senior Elijah Golden balances his studies with touring as he performed in Alabama at a Christmas concert and on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, where he earned a standing ovation. He now returns to Providence to complete his senior thesis in English and Spanish while working on a new solo album. Brown University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island owns a building at the Big E fairgrounds in West Springfield that shows local food and goods and follows Massachusetts law. State officials said the building needs repairs and is in the process of hiring a contractor—annual maintenance costs are about $70,000. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Rhode Island now accepts retail applications for recreational cannabis licenses with only 24 available spots spread across six regions—applicants will be chosen by a lottery after a merit review, and social equity candidates began filing last August with certification scheduled for November. In addition, a separate deadline for medical marijuana dispensary applications in Zone 1 is set for this Thursday. The Boston Globe

- ➤ At the Urban Perinatal Center in Pawtucket, Birth Center Week runs from September 14 to 20 as doulas host an event linking new and expecting mothers with support—Executive Director Quatia Orsorio explained the midwifery model aims to lower risks like maternal mortality, pre-term birth and low birth weight.
