COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and city leaders held a ribbon cutting on Thursday to mark the completion of Richardson Park renovations. The project cost nearly $2 million and added an outdoor fitness area, two playgrounds, and a renovated splashpad—showing the city’s effort to create safe, sustainable spaces.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chef Sky Haneul Kim won a James Beard award at Gift Horse and is leaving her Providence restaurant next week as she and her husband plan to move to South Korea in early October—she is pregnant and will be a stay-at-home mom while her husband seeks a new cooking job and both help on her father’s rice farm. Her decision comes as she ponders the timing of motherhood amid a banner year in New England seafood.  The Boston Globe
  • The restored Old Canteen neon sign now hangs inside Wally's Wieners in Providence — it is part of a renovation that creates a tribute lounge to honor Old Canteen, which closed January 19 after six decades.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University announced plans to renovate the 59,000-square-foot Prince Lab at 355 Brook St after receiving a $16.75 million gift from Pierre Lassonde’s foundation — a major boost for turning the building into the Lassonde Innovation and Design Hub for the updated Brown Design Workshop. The full-scale project will add classroom and lab spaces and is set to begin during the spring semester, lasting about 18 months.  The Boston Globe

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Roger Williams University engineering professor Maija Benitz said losing the Revolution Wind project will injure the region because it helps supply clean power to 350,000 homes and meet state climate plans. The 700-megawatt wind farm was stopped in August and now faces court challenges, and any further delay will put grid reliability at risk—threatening both the economy and the environment.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The T.F. Green board approved a 9.2% raise, nearly $97,000 performance bonus, and a two-year contract extension for CEO Iftikhar Ahmad on Tuesday morning—praising his work on terminal renovations, nonstop flight increases, and stronger partnerships. The board also added a cost-of-living adjustment to his contract while noting past disputes with unionized staff.  Rhode Island PBS
  • DC Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb announced a $259,294 judgment against Michael Redmond, a former assistant principal who worked in Providence while claiming to work remotely for DC Public Schools — the court ruled he cheated the District by collecting pay for work he did not do.  Go Local Prov
  • Delays in releasing FEMA funding have left state emergency director Marc R. Pappas concerned about next year's emergency preparedness, leading RIEMA to postpone key initiatives. Federal reform efforts and upcoming legislative proposals may soon streamline disaster response—state leaders are urging less red tape and more stable support.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two Rhode Island students say lawmakers should ban menthol vape products to protect young people since the 2019 flavor ban exempted menthol and led to a shift toward these products—raising concerns about youth addiction. They argue that passing a new ban will further lower the risk of young people starting to vape.  The Boston Globe
  • St. James Episcopal Church in North Providence installed a Narcan life box stocked with about 20 boxes of Narcan nasal spray to help save lives and will bless it later today—making it the first church in the state to do so.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wednesday, Cumberland field hockey beat Lincoln 3-2 in overtime at Lincoln High School to avenge a loss from last season; star player Molly Enestvedt left with a leg cramp and Katherine Dwyer scored the winning goal—Lincoln suffered its first loss this season. Cumberland will use this win to build momentum as it chases a championship.  The Providence Journal
