BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce scheduled its Outlook Luncheon featuring Jerome Powell on Rosh Hashana and regrets the conflict that keeps some Jewish community members from attending—chamber leaders say a recording and summary will be shared for those who miss the event.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • A local report reviews the careers of many famous Rhode Island TV anchors—names include Kelly Bates, Nick Coit, and Meredith Viera—who have shaped local news over decades. Their careers in weather forecasting, investigative reporting, and anchoring show the lasting impact these broadcasters have had on our community.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence’s first listening bar, Murmur HiFi Lounge, will open this winter at 276 Westminster Street—using studio-quality vintage audio equipment to deliver true sound—and offer a curated menu of local food and drinks. Inspired by Tokyo’s jazz kissaten—the owners wanted to blend local style with global influence—the venue will schedule weekly music sessions and private listening room events.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Providence Mayor Brett Smiley signed an executive order Monday morning called A Safe Providence for All that clarified police will not serve as immigration officials or hide their identities — a measure meant to boost public safety and community trust.  ABC 6
  • Today, Mayor Brett Smiley has negotiated a deal to buy the office building at 444 Westminster Street from former Mayor Joe Paolino for $18.5M even though the assessor values it at $7M. The City Council Finance Committee will review the borrowing resolution today at 5:30 p.m.—a move officials say will help stabilize future costs.  Go Local Prov
  • Sen. Whitehouse and Sen. Tim Scott have introduced the bipartisan QUAHOGS Act — a measure that will create a task force to study why Rhode Island quahogs and other shellfish are in steep decline. Harvests have dropped sharply since 1959, and the task force will seek answers to support local seafood traditions.  Rhode Island PBS
  • A federal judge ruled on Monday that the Revolution Wind project may resume construction—granting the developers a preliminary injunction against the US Interior’s stop-work order from Aug. 22. Ørsted said the project will restart affected work soon with safety as the top priority as the legal case continues.  The Boston Globe
  • Providence mayor Brett Smiley signed an executive order on Sept. 22 reaffirming that police officers will not assist ICE with civil immigration cases—upholding the city policy. He stated that while police work with federal agencies on criminal matters, they remain focused on protecting community safety amid federal criticism.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Mariah Stump of Brown University leads Walk with a Doc, a free program where residents meet every Saturday at 10 a.m. at downtown spots like the Providence River pedestrian bridge to hear brief health talks and enjoy a walk for fitness.  Rhode Island PBS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Providence Journal is holding an online poll for Girls Soccer Player of the Week with nominees from La Salle, North Providence, Exeter-West Greenwich and Lincoln School. Nominees include Rebecca Audi, Eva Fontaine, Thea Jackson, Paynter Maher and Maiali Rizzo—voting ends later this week and phone calls, emails and social media contact will not be counted.  The Providence Journal
  • Local fans can vote to decide the Providence Journal Week 2 Football Player of the Week from five nominees who delivered strong performances from Thursday through Saturday.
