COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, ABC6 anchor John DeLuca, who has informed locals since 1999, will be inducted into the Rhode Island Radio and TV Hall of Fame at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick—honoring the class of 2025 inductees.  ABC 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Breeze Airways launched an eight-week pilot program offering weekly international flights from T.F. Green International Airport to Cancun with a base fare of $159 that began Feb. 18 and ended April 4. The flights were available for booking as the airline tested demand for international travel from local passengers.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport has received FAA approval as Breeze Airways prepares to launch limited international service with a weekly flight to Cancun starting Feb. 14, 2026. The eight-week trial route—ending mid-April 2026—marks the return of scheduled international flights after years of sporadic service.  The Boston Globe

CULTURE NEWS

  • Before he became the lead guitarist for Talking Heads, David Byrne worked at Olneyville New York System in Providence where he served chili-covered hot dogs late into the night. He recalled in a TikTok video his early job—an experience that showed his modest start in Rhode Island.  The Providence Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • Starting Oct. 1, residential electric bills will rise to 14.8 cents per kilowatt hour, so a typical household using 500 kilowatt hours will pay about $24.49 more each month. The Public Utilities Commission approved the rate increase on Sept. 25, and relief measures of over $200 million including bill credits remain pending.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge in Rhode Island ruled on Wednesday that requiring states to enforce immigration law to qualify for disaster funds is unconstitutional — state attorneys general argued that the conditions were coercive and harmed emergency preparedness.  10 WJAR
  • RIPTA will cut trips, shorten schedules and lower bus frequency on 46 of 67 routes effective Sept. 27—most reductions will hit weekend and off-peak service, and transit advocates worry the changes will limit access for many riders.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Representative Seth Magaziner has raised concerns about the House bill on college athlete pay because it would stop athletes from being treated as employees — a change that would block unionizing — and he says he will support the legislation only after key amendments are made. He noted that other issues, such as the transfer portal, remain unaddressed.  The Boston Globe
  • Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha joined 22 state attorneys general and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro to block a bill provision that would cut Medicaid payments for Planned Parenthood services—an action he said will worsen local health care struggles and raise expenses for families.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • A person in their 60s from Providence County tested positive for West Nile virus and remains in the hospital after symptoms began early September—this is the first confirmed case in the state this year.  10 WJAR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • WW Holdings LLC has proposed a redevelopment plan for an old building at 885 Westminster St. in the West End that will add 74 apartment units to help ease the housing shortage. The plan will expand the two-story structure by three stories — and include parking, bike storage, and two commercial retail spaces.  The Boston Globe
