COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence Fire Department and Police Department will lend vehicles to a Touch-a-Truck event tomorrow at Roger Williams Park to celebrate National Preparedness Month — the event will let kids get a closer look at first responders and local safety efforts.  ABC 6
  • The union NABET-CWA called on viewers to boycott ABC6 and NBC10 after Sinclair’s takeover cut jobs—reducing local news coverage in Providence. It said layoffs, including meteorologist Kelly Bates, have weakened distinct local voices and urged advertisers and public figures to shun the channels.  Rhode Island PBS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nexstar and Sinclair dropped their boycotts of Jimmy Kimmel Live after earlier preempting the show over remarks made by Kimmel about Charlie Kirk. Nexstar, which owns WPRI-12 and other local channels, and Sinclair, owner of WJAR-10 + ABC6, ended the boycott after lawmakers from both parties questioned the move.  Go Local Prov
  • Gene Valicenti interviewed Greg Stevens, the retiring owner of the Olneyville New York System in Providence — he recently sold the restaurant to Heritage Restaurant Group. The full interview will be published later today.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Work on demolishing and replacing the stage at Waterplace Park resumed on Friday amid repairs; WaterFire said that scheduled events for today and Oct. 4 will happen as planned even as some performance areas may shift later in October and November. A Providence spokesperson said the work will last about 4—6 weeks.  10 WJAR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ocean State Labs, a new life science incubator set to open next year, will bring researchers, investors and startups together on 150 Richmond St. in Providence's Interstate 195 District—focusing on biotech projects in cancer treatment, gene therapy, tissue regeneration and Alzheimer’s research to boost local jobs.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Rhode Island regulators approved a 16% winter electric rate hike that will raise bills by about $22.28 per month starting Oct. 1—while they review proposals for up to $180 million in bill credits and other changes to ease seasonal cost spikes.  Rhode Island PBS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A microforest was planted on Pearl Street in Providence in May to bring nature to areas lacking green space and combat urban heat using the Miyawaki method—Groundwork Rhode Island and the Pearl Street Garden Collective led the project and plan to offer educational tours while seeking new funding as federal grants face cuts.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • RIPTA riders face service cuts that affect 45 routes starting today—many buses will run less frequently with some trips eliminated and a fare increase planned, so riders may need to adjust their routines.  10 WJAR
  • An abandoned building on Pine Street in Providence was condemned after a third fire in under two years — demolition permits are being processed and utilities have been shut off to allow its quick removal.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • A person in their 60s from Providence County has been hospitalized after testing positive for West Nile virus following symptoms that began in early September, state health officials said. The CDC will conduct further tests—13 mosquito samples have tested positive for the virus this season.  The Boston Globe

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A former Sheraton hotel in Warwick near T.F. Green International Airport has been converted into The Presley Apartments—a 190-unit complex offering studio and one-bedroom apartments for middle-income families with rents starting at $1,295. The project features amenities such as an indoor pool and shared workspace and supports state plans to boost affordable housing with a $2.2 million Middle Income Loan Program.  The Boston Globe

  • Rhode Island high school football teams competed in Week 3 games on Friday, Saturday and Thursday, with matchups such as Cranston West vs. St. Raphael and Central Falls vs. North Providence and final scores and stats to be updated by The Providence Journal over the weekend—coaches must send their game details by 10 p.m. on weeknights.  The Providence Journal
  • The Classical football team trailed by one point at halftime but rallied in the second half to beat Chariho 22—9 on Thursday. The Purple made key plays that boosted their momentum as they continue their season.  The Providence Journal
