CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Gamm Theatre in Warwick, Tony Kushner’s play Angels in America, Part Two runs through Oct. 19—featuring returning actors and a set that evokes the tough era of the AIDS crisis. The performance directed by Brian McEleney ties past political struggles to issues seen today.  The Boston Globe
  • Community Libraries of Providence are hosting free events this month including Encuentro Literario on Oct.2 at Knight Memorial Library with Spanish-speaking educators and a discussion on AI in journalism at Rochambeau Library on Oct.7 with Tony Silvia explaining ethical issues. The libraries also offer a costume exchange at Wanskuck, a haunted house called Knightmare on Elmwood on Oct.24, and trick-or-treating at Wanskuck and Washington Park on Oct.30.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Keith Hoffmann, a former senior official in the AG's office, will launch his campaign today on the Pedestrian Bridge in Providence at noon—challenging Attorney General Peter Neronha's seat in the upcoming election.  ABC 6
  • Providence – The Office of the Child Advocate announced on Sept. 30 it launched an inquiry into 29 child deaths and 9 near—fatalities over the past six years by convening a Child Fatality Review Panel that will review the cases and issue a public report with recommendations.  The Providence Journal
  • Attorney General Peter Neronha and Brown University Health CEO John Fernandez will announce a major healthcare agreement today at 10 a.m. at the attorney general's office & the deal will make it easier for people to get primary care and give better support to providers.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Between July 2024 and July 2025, 131 30-day discharge notices were issued and 23 cases of hospital dumping were reported, showing gaps in the timely return of long-term care residents. Brown University Health spent an estimated $9 million in 2024 on patients who could not be properly discharged—raising concerns about care and dementia support in nine facilities.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island leaders and Brown University Health will announce a major health care agreement on Tuesday—aimed at boosting primary care after Anchor Medical’s closure left over 20,000 people without a doctor. Attorney General Peter Neronha said the plan will offer better support and pay for primary care doctors while legislative actions to raise Medicaid rates are planned.  10 WJAR
  • A Rutgers Health study found that non-opioid medicines work better than opioids after dental procedures, yet Rhode Island dentists still prescribed over 17,000 opioids last year with nearly 4,000 being first exposures for young people. Parents are urged to talk with their dentist+ about choosing non-opioid pain treatments to stop a gateway to addiction.  Go Local Prov

SPORTS NEWS

  • For the first time since 2021, the Red Sox earned the 5th seed and will play October baseball as they face the Yankees in a best-of-three Wild Card series at Yankee Stadium—winner advances to the Division Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.  ABC 6
  • High school teams in Rhode Island played on Tuesday with Burrillville boys soccer winning 2-0 and Lincoln School girls soccer winning 7-0, along with many close contests in field hockey, tennis, and volleyball. Coaches reported results by 10 p.m. and today a full slate of games starts as early as 3:45 p.m.—a busy day for local sports.  The Providence Journal
