- ➤ Rhode Island will host folk music and art events this weekend, with Folk at the Farm in Warren on Oct.5 from 1 to 5 p.m. + a screening at the RISD Museum on Oct.5, while Oktoberfest at Narragansett Brewery runs from Oct.3 to 5 and the Nine Central Film Festival in Newport concluded on Oct.4 + featuring local short films. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brown University Associate Professor Wang Lu draws on her early life in Xi’an and international experiences to create compositions that connect people and capture diverse soundscapes—she also teaches music and composition while mentoring students to express themselves creatively. - ➤ Rhode Island students showed modest improvement on the RICAS as 31.4% reached math proficiency—up from 30.1% last year—even though English scores improved only to 33.7% and remain below pre-pandemic levels; the gap with Massachusetts narrowed to about 9 points in math and 8 in English, officials said. - ➤ Rhode Island began charging a 7% sales tax on off-street parking at short-term lots and garages on Oct. 1, adding extra cost to parking rates and collecting about $3.2 million yearly. The tax applies to event parking—beach, overnight for hotel guests, and airport parking—while on-street metered parking remains untaxed. The Providence Journal
- ➤ On October 2, the Providence City Council approved a $25 million plan to purchase the WaterFire Arts Center and the Doorley Municipal Building to end a costly lease—saving at least $1.4 million in rental payments through 2036 and financing the buy with bonds issued by the Public Building Authority while leasing back the WaterFire center to its arts group.
