COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gloria Gemma’s Flames of Hope lighting took place shortly after sunset with a torch procession and a State Ballet performance as 150 breast cancer survivors walked from the Rhode Island State House steps to Waterplace Park Basin to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The fires will burn until 11 p.m. and vendors + food trucks served the community.  10 WJAR
  • The Providence Foundation is marking its 50th anniversary tonight at The Reserve on Dorrance as executive director David Salvatore outlined plans to transform downtown with new housing and improved transit. Salvatore said Providence's authenticity—its historic, walkable, and creative spirit—gives the city an advantage while urging sustained investments in safety and public spaces.  The Boston Globe

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Providence crews said one person was taken to Rhode Island Hospital after an outdoor heater tank ruptured and caused a butane torch to leak at Track 15 on Saturday—Track 15 remains open as fire officials investigate the incident.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The annual Rhode Island Mission of Mercy dental clinic provided free oral care to Rhode Islanders in need at Providence Community Health Centers Dental Clinic (335R Prairie Ave.) this weekend. Volunteers began lining up at 5:45 a.m. each day and more than 33 dental and medical professionals staffed the clinic on a first-come, first-served basis until around 5:30 p.m.  10 WJAR
  • The Rhode Island Department of Health suspended nursing assistant Christina Goncalves Depina for six months on Saturday, October 04 for letting a patient name her as a beneficiary on their IRA and giving morphine without proper training—she must complete required courses and work under supervision to have her license reinstated.  Go Local Prov

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee and past housing secretaries backed ADUs to help with the housing crisis, but in 2024 only 66 ADUs were finished and Providence issued just one ADU certificate—far below expectations. Massachusetts is set to approve many more ADUs this year, showing that Rhode Island’s program has struggled to meet its goals.  Go Local Prov

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Johnston football team won its homecoming game on Saturday by beating Chariho 42—7, with players Ethan Archambeault and Kendall Perry each throwing two touchdown passes and Yadier Grullon making key catches. The team made big plays and a strong defense helped secure the win as they prepare for tougher matches ahead.  The Providence Journal
