ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On October 2, Providence police reported that 38-year-old Lucas Garcia was struck by a school bus while crossing Union Avenue near route 10, prompting a vigil at Union Avenue at Service Road One at 4:30 p.m.—it is the second fatal accident at that intersection in three years. ABC 6
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Central Falls judge Joseph Molina Flynn—who resigned in January—was barred from practicing law on Oct. 6 by the Rhode Island Supreme Court after agencies searched his office and clients said he mishandled money. ABC 6
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Education released SAT results for high schools that show strong performance in English language arts and math. Ten schools, including Classical, East Greenwich & Barrington, met or exceeded expectations while three schools surpassed math benchmarks, the department said. The Boston Globe
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A young Atlantic puffin found in a man's backyard in Wrentham on Sunday is now cared for at the Chepachet wildlife rehabilitation center, where staff tube feed it while it gets ready to fly away again this weekend—officials said strong winds likely knocked the bird off course. The center is asking for donations to help cover daily care costs for other rescued birds. 10 WJAR

- ➤ Rhode Island’s race for attorney general is in flux as candidate Robert Craven dropped out amid domestic violence questions while Jason Knight and Keith Hoffmann joined the contest. Lawmakers—Joseph Solomon, Kim Ahern, and Charles Calenda—are mulling their options with Calenda expecting a decision by the end of October. The Boston Globe
- ➤ The Providence City Council’s Committee on Ordinances passed amendments to the community-police relations act that define prohibited cooperation between the Providence Police Department and federal immigration authorities—measures that add accountability and move to a full council vote on October 16th. LIFESTYLE NEWS
- ➤ Instacart’s October 2024 analysis showed that Rhode Islanders picked Sour Patch Kids as their top Halloween candy even though Reese's Peanut Butter Cups led in national sales—local preferences lean toward sweet and sour treats.
