- ➤ The Smithfield School Department is investigating a report of hazing at Smithfield High School after anti-Semitic remarks were allegedly made by football team members—affected families have been contacted by school officials, the athletic director, and the head coach to address the incident. - ➤ School administrators met with parents on Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter School to address the sudden resignation of six teachers and concerns over the lapse in lesson plans, with the diocese yet to explain the situation. 10 WJAR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Oct. 13, Rhode Island post offices, state offices, courts, and public libraries will be closed for Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day; schools will also be shut for the holiday. FedEx, UPS, and most retail stores will operate—with UPS deliveries expected to see a one-day delay—and while Chase and TD Bank branches will remain open, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Capital One, and Citibank will be closed. - ➤ Youth advocate Shannon Massaroco, who leads program development at the Rhode Island Division of Youth Development, says many tech tools used by schools, courts and child welfare agencies use biased data and can hurt those who are already struggling.
