- ➤ Reservoir Avenue in Providence was named for the Sockanosset Reservoir that served the city in the 1870s—its waters were withdrawn in the 1920s when the Scituate Reservoir took over and the land was later sold for housing in Cranston. The Providence Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Providence’s former Christopher Columbus statue was removed from Columbus Square in 2020 amid protests and bought for $50,000 by former Mayor Joseph Paolino Jr. before being moved to Johnston Memorial Park in 2023 ahead of Columbus Day—Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. said the bronze statue now stands as a local fixture symbolizing Italian heritage with donated security measures.
