- ➤ A prize-winning 2,200—pound green squash grown by planter Joe Jutras will soon be on display at Roger Williams Park Zoo’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular. Jutras, who beat his previous record by about 30—pounds, has grown giant produce for nearly 30 years. 10 WJAR
- ➤ Tom and Aggie Perkins, known for their generosity across Aquidneck Island, died in a plane crash on October 13 and left a *permanent impact* on local projects such as fundraisers for the Norman Bird Sanctuary and support for Newport Hospital and Angel Flight NE. 10 WJAR

- ➤ Jephry Floral Studio has moved from the West End to 326 Westminster Street in downtown Providence and will celebrate its opening party tomorrow, Oct. 16; the shop offers made-to-order arrangements, houseplants, and delivery subscriptions and may add classes in the future—drawing local plant lovers to its new space. - ➤ Capital Grille in Providence is offering its Wagyu and Wine deal in the lounge area until November 16 that lets guests choose one of three Wagyu burgers and a glass of one of four selected red wines for $35 per person—excluding tip and tax. The Providence Journal

- ➤ Ghost hunter Jason Hawes changed his mind about buying the historic Conjuring House in Burrillville—he raised over $133,000 through a GoFundMe campaign and pledged to match donations to save the property from foreclosure. He said the fundraiser will help keep the 18th century home affordable to visit and preserve its legacy for the community. 10 WJAR
- ➤ The Culinary Arts Museum on Johnson & Wales University’s campus, closed since 2017, will host a two-day ticketed event on Oct 30 and Oct 31 where visitors can see rare artifacts—such as a 17th-century cookbook, handwritten recipe books from a chef favored by JFK, and historic menus—and pay $25 for admission. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Brown University professor emeritus Peter Howitt has won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, making him the third Brown faculty member recognized for this honor—he shares the award with Philippe Aghion and Joel Mokyr for work on creative destruction and sustained economic growth. The Providence Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A juvenile Atlantic puffin was rescued in Chepachet on Oct. 5 after it was found far inland and was moved from Provincetown, where it caught a ride on a charter boat, to be released off the Maine coast on Oct. 11—rescuers acted quickly to return the bird to its natural habitat. The puffin showed good health during its brief stay with Congress of the Birds. The Providence Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Providence is searching for two spruce or fir trees—one between 35 and 45 feet for the City Hall display and one between 15 and 20 feet for the Providence Rink—to be featured during the holiday season. Residents must send nominations to Cultural Affairs Manager Allison Barry—nominations are due by November 7 and the city will cut and haul away the winning trees at no charge. 10 WJAR
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Brown University researchers tracked the sleep patterns of 102 elementary students and found that only 14% met national guidelines for nine to twelve hours of sleep while 83% of parents believed their children were getting enough rest. Latino children met the guidelines less often, with only 4.4% compared to 22.8% of non-Latino students — a gap experts say could affect learning and health. Rhode Island PBS
- ➤ Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos from the American Lung Association said getting the flu and COVID-19 vaccines is important to help prevent serious illness—he compared them to seat belts that reduce harm in an accident. Rhode Island guidelines recommend these vaccines for everyone 6 months and older, while FDA advice limits the COVID-19 shot to older adults and those who are immunocompromised. 10 WJAR

- ➤ Crossroads RI held an open house on Oct. 10th for its new Summer Street apartments in Providence, a 176-unit permanent supportive housing building featuring themed floors and a built-in mud room (a space to sit while switching shoes). - ➤ Tuesday high school sports saw Bishop Hendricken win 4-0 over Moses Brown and Burrillville secure a 4-1 victory in boys soccer while girls soccer, field hockey, tennis and volleyball games delivered other key results — teams showed strong play across the state.
