COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The South Providence community honored Asata Tigrai for decades of dedicated work for tenant rights by naming the community center on Prairie Avenue after her—she helped residents through crises from pest infestations to storm-damaged homes. Tigrai said challenges remain as high rents and limited housing continue to affect families and she will keep advocating for safe, affordable housing.  10 WJAR

CRIME NEWS

  • Rhode Island DEM and Division of Fish and Wildlife Outdoor Education officials fined a Burrillville hunter $1,000 & took his gear after he was caught baiting deer, hunting without a tag, and illegally killing a deer in Glocester, while another Rehoboth resident was charged for hunting without a license.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • SIX returns to PPAC from Oct. 22 through Oct. 26 in a fast-paced 80-minute show that uses pop music to tell Henry VIII’s six wives’ stories — tickets start at just over $50 while a daily digital lottery offers up to two $40 tickets through Oct. 17.  The Providence Journal

  • City and school officials broke ground for the new Mount Pleasant High School Campus on Oct. 15— the project is part of a $1 billion plan to build new facilities by 2030.  10 WJAR
  • The principal at Saint Peter School in Warwick was placed on paid administrative leave after a parent's complaint that confidential information was shared online—officials said the investigation will be completed by week's end.  10 WJAR
  • On Wednesday, Rhode Island education officials released a five-year plan to improve services for 26,000 special education students, aiming to boost academics and career training as concerns over federal layoffs raised fears about future grant reviews—officials say the plan shifts focus from basic compliance to enhancing student outcomes.  The Boston Globe

  • Rhode Island Environmental Police announced that their K-9 Bear died after serving over 7 years with partner Christ Duguid & patrolling state woods and waters while helping locate missing persons and uncover hidden evidence.  10 WJAR

  • Providence restaurant Al Forno shared its apple crisp crostata recipe that features a homemade food-processor tart dough and fresh McIntosh, Macoun or Empire apples and was first demonstrated by pastry chef Neil Temkin in a 2012 cooking class on South Water St.—A local reader recently requested the recipe after losing part of a 13-year-old newspaper clipping and reviving a cherished culinary memory.  The Providence Journal
  • A travel magazine said Providence is one of the most peaceful spots in the nation because its neat public places such as Roger Williams Park Botanical Garden and gondola rides on the Providence River give people quiet ways to relax amid the city's busy college and construction noise.  The Providence Journal
