COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Deportation Defense Network has mobilized in Providence after ICE agents were seen near local courthouses, with volunteers going door-to-door and handing out Know Your Rights fliers while some businesses have become immigrant defense zones—closing their doors to ICE without a judicial warrant. Organizer Maya Lehrer said the group, made up of 350 volunteers, expects more ICE activity and is urging the state to allow virtual court hearings to protect community members.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • A Burrillville man was fined $1,000 and had his hunting privileges revoked for a year after he was caught poaching, baiting deer, and illegally killing a deer in Glocester—cellphone evidence also linked a Rehoboth resident to hunting without a license, officials said.  The Boston Globe

CULTURE NEWS

  • A series of fall pop-up restaurant events are set to take place across New England with special dinners, tasting menus, and culinary classes scheduled in cities from Cambridge to Newport. In Providence, Club Frills will host a Candy Rave party on Oct. 30—featuring cocktail specials and homemade candy—as downtown Amaryllis plans an eight-course rooftop supper club dinner on Nov. 19.  The Boston Globe

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rhode Island union members have resumed work on Revolution Wind, a project building energy infrastructure to support local jobs and affordable power. The Laborers’ International Union of North America backs an all-of-the-above energy plan that will include wind, gas, nuclear and solar projects—an approach meant to strengthen the grid and sustain local employment.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • John Colarusso has worked at Brown for 40 years, starting as a cook’s helper and now managing campus maintenance projects—he oversees inspections, repairs, and minor renovations across the campus. His career shows Brown’s focus on learning and personal growth through supportive work programs.  Brown University
  • Rhode Island College hosted a 'powering up' ceremony for its new cyber range on Oct. 15—state leaders and cybersecurity experts saw workstations running realistic cyberattack simulations using IBM's Cloud Range platform; the room will be fully integrated into the curriculum next semester and later moved to Whipple Hall after $73 million in renovations.  Rhode Island PBS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Providence passed an ordinance to ban gas-powered leaf blowers by 2033 and limited their use to autumn starting in 2027 plus the city will offer outreach to help landscapers switch to electric models. Some council members and local contractors expressed concerns about the cost of new equipment and how enforcement will work.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Rhode Island resident who moved from Boston to Pawtucket in August has not received her renewed driver's license—DMV records show it was printed on Sept. 12 and returned on Oct. 9 by the post office, so it is being held at the Cranston DMV for pick-up between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.  The Providence Journal
  • Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Nov. 2 so locals should set clocks back manually while cellphones adjust automatically and enjoy an extra hour of sleep. Experts warn that earlier sunrises and sunsets may impact mood and advise residents to adjust their daily routines by getting outdoors to help maintain energy and well-being.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sleep expert Dr. Richard Millman from Brown University Health said poor sleep may contribute to ADHD symptoms by affecting cognitive performance through restless sleep, mouth breathing, and low iron levels. He advises parents to monitor sleep patterns and check ferritin levels — iron supplements should be taken with vitamin C away from calcium sources.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Resendes transformed Bryant University into a soccer powerhouse by guiding the Bulldogs to an 11-0-1 record after a 3-0 win over Brown that swept the Rhode Island schedule with victories over Providence College and URI. The team will face Princeton on October 21 and host Vermont on October 25 as they prepare for a challenging stretch.  The Boston Globe
