BUSINESS NEWS

  • In August, Deloitte agreed to settle class-action lawsuits over a 2024 cyberattack that compromised private data of 640,000 Rhode Islanders from the RIBridges benefits system by using an employee's credentials. The proposed settlement would create a $6.3m fund with cash options based on documented losses or a flat $100 payment — and it includes identity theft monitoring benefits while Deloitte pays $5m to the state.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, the Rhode Island State Police Special Victims Unit said it began an investigation in early October into alleged misconduct by former Ponaganset High School teacher Alisha Crins—who resigned last week—as school officials and the Attorney General’s office joined the inquiry.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ken Burns previewed his new six-part documentary series on the American Revolution at the State Room today — he explained how Rhode Island played a key role by highlighting Nathanael Greene and the burning of the Gaspee. The film will premiere Nov.16 on Ocean State Media as the nation nears its 250th anniversary.  The Boston Globe
  • Filmmaker Ken Burns—speaking at events at Rhode Island College and the State Library on Oct. 16—said Rhode Island played a huge role in the American Revolution by highlighting figures like Nathanael Greene and the regiments that welcomed Black soldiers. His new PBS series, The American Revolution, will air on Nov. 16 and brings the state’s past to light.  The Providence Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tariffs on imported goods are raising prices for New England consumers, affecting costs for lumber, clothing, and electronics — a burden that has local families and businesses feeling the pinch. The dean of Roger Williams University School of Law explained that these taxes act as a regressive cost that may slow local manufacturing and housing development.  The Boston Globe
  • A Housing Fact Book report by HousingWorks RI at Roger Williams University shows that single-family home prices in Rhode Island have risen higher and faster than anywhere else and that households earning the median income of $112,858 cannot afford a home—rent in the state is increasing at the steepest rate in New England. More than one-third of households are cost burdened, with many Hispanic and Black homeowners facing significant challenges amid slow new construction.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday morning, about 1,000 homes and businesses in East Providence lost power along with 300 customers in Narragansett, and Rhode Island Energy did not immediately provide a cause.  10 WJAR
  • Providence City Council approved a new ordinance that phases out gas-powered leaf blowers — the law permits use only from October 1 to December 15 starting January 1, 2027 and bans them entirely on January 1, 2033. Homeowners facing a rule violation will first receive a warning and then a $100 fine on a second offense.  Go Local Prov

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday morning, window washers dressed as superheroes rappelled down the side of Hasbro Children's Hospital to delight young patients — a tradition by Fish Window Cleaning of Rhode Island that brought smiles to the kids and their parents.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Braylon Guilbeault, who had not played quarterback since 9U, stepped in for Woonsocket on Thursday night and scrambled 42 yards on the final drive to secure a 21-20 win over Pawtucket. The win boosted Woonsocket’s playoff hopes while Pawtucket now faces tougher odds in the remaining games.  The Providence Journal
  • In Week 6, Rhode Island high school football teams played on Thursday, Friday and today's games, with matches scheduled from early morning to 7 p.m. The Providence Journal will publish final scores and stats later this weekend—coaches are reminded to send in results by 10 p.m.  The Providence Journal
