COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Providence VA Medical Center offers flu and RSV shots from 8:30 a.m.—noon Monday through Wednesday, while veterans can access a series of fall events. These include a Halloween celebration on Oct. 25 at Centreville Bank Stadium, a Family Fun Day on Nov. 1 at RI Indoor Karting, a free rocket launch on Nov. 8 at URI, a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast on Nov. 10 in Warwick, and free haircuts on Nov. 11 at Frankenfades.  The Providence Journal
  • Grandparents Dr. Ghoreishi and Dr. Khorsand begin a five-day trial today in Kent County Family Court over unsupervised visits with granddaughter Laila as Scott Naso claims the visits harm her and cites alleged improper medical care that led to his wife’s death. Naso has spent over $300,000 on legal fees — and he will not allow the visits to resume until the court rules in Laila’s best interest — while the trial will examine conflicting evidence and feature a dozen witnesses.  The Boston Globe

  • Roast House Restaurant in Pawtucket will close next Saturday as the owners decide it is time to slow down after serving the community for many years — the Blackstone location will remain open.  10 WJAR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Brown University announced that its endowment surpassed $8 billion after it earned an 11.9% return in 2025 — the gains generated $853 million for student aid, research, and other priorities, while the school cut over 100 jobs and increased its president’s contract terms.  Go Local Prov
  • University of Rhode Island economics professor Len Lardaro said Rhode Island is now in a recession after rising unemployment claims and fewer new housing permits signaled negative trends over the past year—he warned that additional pressures from a slowing national economy and ongoing tariff wars will make it harder for many local families.  Rhode Island PBS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brown lost its exhibition game 92-74 at Pizzitola Center after UMass erased a five-point lead with strong three-point shooting. Coach Mike Martin said the team will work on defense and rotation—after injuries and lost momentum—before their next closed game against Boston College.  The Providence Journal
  • Mt. Hope High School athletes in Bristol will celebrate Homecoming on the road this weekend as ongoing construction for a new school has removed their home fields, so teams now travel by bus to practice and game sites at Roger Williams University, Bristol Parks and Recreation fields and Kickemuit Middle School. Seniors have adjusted to the changes as they prepare for their final season while the new campus will open for learning in fall.  Rhode Island PBS
