COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, Providence College men's basketball team visited Coventry High School to share their personal journeys and inspire students during a panel discussion in the school gym from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.—the event was organized in partnership with Finetco.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Providence Athenaeum displays artifacts that show how Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft were shaped by Providence, featuring a taxidermized crow under a glass cloche and a bust of Poe. The exhibits tie these literary figures to local legends like the Richmond Fountain and historic homes—preserving a rich horror tradition—while keeping their legacy visible today.  The Providence Journal
  • ABC6 introduces the Mount Hope High School Marching Band as its Band of the Week—new high school bands will be featured every fall Monday at 4 p.m. to showcase local talent.  ABC 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, the family of a wheelchair-bound man filed an ADA complaint after high school officials placed him in a gravel area near the parking lot during a football game, preventing him from sitting with his family. The complaint alleges that the officials offered an inadequate solution and demanded mandatory ADA training and a formal apology—officials said they would review the matter.  Go Local Prov
  • Brown University professor Ieva Jusionyte got a genius grant from the MacArthur Foundation to study how extraditing organized crime leaders from Mexico to the US affects justice (an $800,000 award). She began her book project and will talk with officials and prisoners as part of her ongoing research.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island officials including Governor Dan McKee and Senator Jack Reed will break ground on Walker Lofts— a 124-unit affordable housing complex serving residents earning at or below 80 percent of the area median income—at the former Sayles Company Dye House in Lincoln on Monday, October 27 at 10 a.m.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown professor emerita Dr. Maureen Phipps was elected to the National Academy of Medicine for her work in reproductive and maternal health—she is one of 100 new members honored for her strong leadership in improving care. She will be formally welcomed at next year’s meeting in October.  Brown University

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new mixed-use building on Atwells Avenue is offering commercial spaces to local businesses. A video tour shows its available areas and design features — inviting interested tenants to inquire.  The Providence Journal

  • Providence Journal holds its seventh edition of the girls volleyball player of the week ballot, and high school sports fans can vote now+ the ballot closes Friday at 11:59 p.m., with past winners including Adrian Brzoza from La Salle and top players from Bay View, Lincoln, North Kingstown, Chariho and Classical.  The Providence Journal
