COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Without stable housing, survivors forced to leave abusive situations are often stuck on long waiting lists for affordable apartments—keeping them at risk of returning to unsafe conditions. Vanessa Volz, CEO of Sojourner House, said that funding cuts and a shortage of survivor-specific units add to the crisis faced by many in Rhode Island.  The Boston Globe

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Middletown couple—Thomas and Agatha Perkins—died from injuries in a Dartmouth highway plane crash on October 13 and were laid to rest Wednesday morning at O’Neill Hayes Funeral Home in Newport with a private burial; the crash remains under investigation by the NTSB near exit 19 on I-195.  ABC 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Apple Cinemas will begin operating the theater at Providence Place mall on November 1—after a Providence County Superior Court judge approved a lease change requested by receiver Mark Russo, who ended Showcase Cinemas’ lease. The new arrangement is expected to bring fresh energy to the mall amid its ongoing receivership.  The Boston Globe
  • Rhode Island’s ISCO Spirits in Providence, which makes gin with local ingredients, ranked seventh in USA TODAY’s best craft gin awards and now welcomes guests at its tasting room near downtown—open during set hours.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Celebrity chef Lidia Bastianich will sign her new cookbook at Dave's Fresh Marketplace in East Greenwich on Oct. 25 during Local Tasting Weekend. She will also be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award from the Rhode Island Italian-American Hall of Fame on Nov. 15 at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston — net proceeds help fund the scholarship program.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island Comic Con will take place Nov. 7-9 at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Amica Mutual Pavilion—official panels include shows like Cobra Kai and Psych plus a Rainn Wilson book reading while last-minute guest cancellations may alter the schedule.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rhode Island College is proposing voluntary retirement buyouts for up to 101 employees to save funds and reallocate resources, offering a one-time payment of 60 percent of their salary with a minimum of $20,000 (employees must have a combined age and service total of at least 80 and have served 10 years). The state council on Postsecondary Education will review the proposal at 5:30 p.m. today and the program will generate savings starting in fiscal year 2027.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its plan to remove about 20 buoys in local waters on Oct. 21 after receiving over 3,200 comments from mariners and harbor officials—local boaters expressed concerns that small vessels might be at risk if electronic systems fail. The agency said it will conduct further analysis and make no changes to navigational aids until safety issues are resolved.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heather Abbott—a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing—turned her painful experience into hope by launching a foundation that gives prosthetic devices to amputees; her program has helped many, including Amanda Kowalski of Warwick, regain mobility with a new prosthetic leg.  10 WJAR
  • Women and Infants Hospital held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to launch its new Mobile Community Health Clinic. The van, launched earlier in October, provides postpartum screenings, contraceptives and other services—strengthening local health support.  ABC 6

  • Mill's Tavern in Providence now offers a tasting menu for $88.95 that features six courses with dishes like duck charcuterie, salmon crudo, and risotto with truffle. A four-course wine pairing is available for $35—service runs Sunday through Thursday with valet parking on North Main Street.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Ponaganset girls soccer team kept their playoff hopes alive with an 8-1 win over North Smithfield on Tuesday, a victory that brought renewed energy to a season marked by close losses. The Chieftains, now 4-9-2, played Scituate on Wednesday and will finish their season at home Friday—focusing on fun even as the chance for playoffs remains slim.  The Providence Journal
