COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches self-defense while building confidence and a strong sense of community among over 100 members, with classes, scholarships, and a free weekly session. Founder Marco McWilliams said the gym is designed to empower people—especially those from marginalized groups—to feel safe and supported.  Rhode Island PBS

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, teachers at Roger Williams Middle School and Nathanael Greene Middle School were assaulted in separate incidents—one incident led to a student being sent to Hasbro Children's Hospital as police and school officials began investigating the events.  Go Local Prov

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, a group of Jewish and Christian community members sent a letter to Smithfield Superintendent Bratz asking why five football players who harassed a Jewish student were allowed to play again—saying the decision may put more students in harm’s way. The group asked for details on how the decision was made and urged schools to require antisemitism training to stop hate.  Go Local Prov

FINANCE NEWS

  • Bank of America has been tapped as co-managing underwriter for a $150M bond sale—needed to fund The Centurion Foundation’s bid for Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. Deal conditions have been eased amid repeated delays as financing shifts from a public offering to a private placement—an approach aimed at attracting specialized investors.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced a new traffic pattern in East Providence and Barrington + crews will resurface Willett Avenue while reducing travel lanes from two to one and installing bike lanes separated by a buffer, with work set to take place Sunday through Thursday nights and finish in two weeks.  10 WJAR
  • At Kent County Family Court, retired pediatrician Dr. Ghoreishi testified that caring for his 4-year-old granddaughter Laila is not unethical as he fights for visitation rights after his daughter died—Scott Naso accused him of overprescribing medications without proper records.   • A report finds Medicaid cuts could leave up to 1,422 Central Falls residents without coverage by 2034. Mayor Maria Rivera said the loss of health care will harm local working families and immigrants—calling on clinics and officials to take swift action.  The Boston Globe
