COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local donation efforts are underway as Hurricane Melissa, a Category 4 storm that could become a Category 5, will hit Jamaica overnight—Providence community members are gathering essentials. Former state rep Marcia Ranglin-Vassell is leading the drive—collections of water, nonperishable food, and first-aid kits will be held at the Church of God of Prophecy on Union Street.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University celebrated the launch of its new Watson School on Oct. 25 as Gen. Mark Milley told future leaders to keep American values — like freedom and equality — in mind, while President Paxson and Dean Friedman explained the school’s plan to bring together different subjects and train public policy makers.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island Food Bank staff are preparing for a surge as lawmakers face a Monday deadline to restore SNAP benefits that could leave 140,000 residents without food help in November (officials note that empty shelves are already a concern). The food bank will speed up its deliveries to 137 local pantries while state leaders work on a plan to cover a potential shortfall of about $30 million a month.  10 WJAR
  • The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced that nightly closures on I-95 and I-295 in Warwick resumed yesterday and will continue for bridge reconstruction along East Avenue. The closures are set from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Oct.29, Oct.30, Nov.2, Nov.3, Nov.4, Nov.12 and Nov.13—motorists should follow posted detour routes.  ABC 6

  • Special Olympics Rhode Island held its sixth annual Law Enforcement Torch Run at its Fall Festival Sunday in Smithfield — six law enforcement members ran 70 miles in 24 hours and raised over $10,000 to support sports, health, and leadership programs for Special Olympics athletes.  ABC 6
  • Bryant men's soccer lost 2—1 to defending champion Vermont Saturday night at Beirne Stadium before a sellout crowd as small mistakes allowed Vermont’s Philipp Kuehn to score twice. Coach Ruben Resendes said the loss will force the Bulldogs to fix errors ahead of upcoming matches after a run of 13 wins.  The Providence Journal
