ECONOMY NEWS

  • Union painter Orimartin Lima completed offshore wind safety training to work on the 700-megawatt Revolution Wind project but now faces layoffs after a federal stop-work order paused work, leaving 24 union painters without assignments. Rescheduled painting work is set for next year — legal challenges in federal court and shifting project plans have left local laborers unsure about their future jobs.  Rhode Island PBS

  • La Salle Academy's Board of Trustees announced Tuesday, October 28, that Donald J. Kavanagh will continue as president with a three year term ending June 30 and that he is the first official lay president in the school's 154 year history—approved by the Brothers of the Christian Schools’ District of Eastern North America.  Go Local Prov
  • The R/V Endeavor retired last month from URI’s Narragansett Bay Campus after 49 years of ocean research—more than 8,000 scientists used it to study the Gulf Stream and changeable weather. A new research vessel, the Narragansett Dawn, is set to arrive in 2027 with updated technology to continue these missions.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Smithfield School Committee Chairman Richard Iannitelli said staff completed an investigation into a report of antisemitic hazing by high school football players and that the superintendent handled the disciplinary appeal. The committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 + review district policy compliance while state leaders call for a thorough investigation.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee will hold a 12:45 p.m. press conference today at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank to announce a plan to support more than 140,000 residents at risk of losing SNAP benefits when federal funds stop rolling out on Nov 1. One in eight Rhode Islanders, including 46,000 children who rely on SNAP for $29 million a month, faces uncertainty, and critics—such as McKee’s primary opponent—urge the state to tap its rainy day fund to mitigate the shortfall.  The Boston Globe

  • Eiley Simmons scored a penalty kick that gave the Chariho Chargers a 2-0 halftime lead over Cranston West, and the team posted a 3-0 win against the Falcons in the Division I preliminary round.  The Providence Journal
  • Voting in the championship round of the best high school football concession stand poll remains open until Nov. 6 at 11:59 p.m.—voters may only cast ballots online as Middletown and La Salle compete after final results showed Middletown defeating Scituate with 59% and La Salle beating Cranston West with 54%. The winner will be decided before the football playoffs begin.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island college basketball fans can vote on how to rank local Division I men's and women's teams ahead of the season tipoff on Nov. 3, with experts predicting ranks from No. 3 for Bryant women to No. 12 for Rhode Island men + Providence teams at No. 4 in both conferences. Voters can cast their opinions online until Monday, Nov. 3 at 11:59 p.m.  The Providence Journal
  • Brown women’s basketball team is ready for the new season and aims to challenge Ivy Madness. Transfers Charlotte Climenhage and Monet Witherspoon joined the team to add depth for their opener on Nov. 7 at Belmont — a move that the coach said reflects a careful recruiting process.  The Providence Journal
