- ➤ Jewish groups held a press conference on Oct. 30 at Twelve Acres Restaurant in Smithfield to support the family of a high school football player who endured antisemitic slurs during a hazing incident. Smithfield town manager Robert W. Seltzer and state Sen. David P. Tikoian both condemned the hazing and antisemitism in the community — calling for stronger measures against hate. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ This season, holiday markets in Rhode Island offer unique gifts and handmade crafts while shoppers sip warm cider and cocoa. Events will run from early November through mid-December at venues in Providence, West Warwick, Pawtucket, Newport, and Jamestown—many with free or low-cost admission that invite everyone to enjoy local art and festive shopping. - ➤ At least six walking tours with spooky themes are planned in Providence this October; one tour follows historic sites linked to Poe and Lovecraft—mixing ghost stories with local history. - ➤ Portsmouth Middle School counselor Kyle Spaltholz received a Milken Educator Award on October 30th for his work with students and teachers, making him the only educator from Rhode Island among 30 winners. He has led programs and helped teachers use technology—boosting education in his school. The Providence Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Roger Williams Park Zoo welcomed its first red panda cubs—Sokka and Katara—on July 4 and they are now viewable from Thursday to Monday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The zoo noted that the cubs may sometimes stay in behind-the-scenes areas as they join a Species Survival Plan to help protect the endangered species. - ➤ Roger Williams Park Zoo said its baby two-toed sloth – named Quint after a character from the movie Jaws – was born on Oct. 11 and weighs about as much as a loaf of bread, with both the baby and its mother Fiona doing well. The sloth is part of a species survival plan that protects their natural habitat as deforestation reduces their living space. The Providence Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ RI Head Start programs that serve low-income children are at risk of funding shortfalls as the government shutdown delays federal reimbursements—care providers are relying on cash reserves and contingency plans to keep services running. Providers remain uncertain if funds will resume on time, raising concerns about future operational stability. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Rhode Island officials confirmed that unused SNAP funds will roll over into November and that EBT cards will keep working during the government shutdown—no new benefits will be issued. They advised residents to use their funds promptly since benefits that remain unused for nine months will be removed from EBT cards. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Providence’s Waterplace Park and Riverwalk are decaying as only $3 million of the $18 million allocated for repairs was spent. Officials said the remaining funds were reprogrammed for design work + many dollars remain unspent, leaving the park in urgent need of repairs. Go Local Prov
