COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several Providence and Cranston restaurants are celebrating Dia de los Muertos with special menus, music and cultural activities through Nov. 2—events include community altars, scavenger hunts and themed dishes at venues like Dolores at Track 15, Xaco Taco and Mexico City Tacos & Tequilas.  The Providence Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A complaint has been filed with the R.I. attorney general over an antisemitic hazing incident on the Smithfield High School football team, and local officials and faith leaders have sharply criticized the school district for reversing player suspensions without explanation while it must submit detailed records by November 13—further review will occur at a school committee meeting on Monday.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A high school senior from Pawtucket says Rhode Island needs more tech schools to let public students learn hands-on skills in engineering, health sciences, and information technology—he supports a proposal to open the New England Technical Academy in fall 2026. He believes that such schools will offer vital real-world experience for students.  The Boston Globe
  • Andrew Herring is a Brown University senior who survived a life-saving liver transplant at 17 when mononucleosis led to acute liver failure and now uses his second chance to excel in squash and study music and computer science plus urge organ donation. He rebuilt his strength with the support of his team and community and continues to share his message of resilience.  Brown University
  • Barrington Public Schools set a fee of $117,000 for a public records request from a local mom who sought nearly 10 years of emails and 15 years of curriculum from a teacher who criticized Charlie Kirk — a request that sparked intervention by the Goldwater Institute. The institute sent a letter arguing the fee is inflated and demanding it be revised or waived — while the district maintained it processes requests in accordance with state law.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • Prospect Medical Holdings filed for bankruptcy and proposed closing Our Lady of Fatima Hospital and Roger Williams Medical Center by Dec. 31, which could affect thousands of patients and nearly 3,000 employees. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said he will oppose the plan—adding to concerns over years of financial struggles and deteriorating conditions.  The Boston Globe

  • Providence College head coach Kim English has built a new roster with nine newcomers — ranging from transfers to freshmen — as the team prepares to open its season Monday against Holy Cross, and he said the changes aim to return the Friars to the NCAA tourney after last season's struggles.  The Boston Globe
  • John Puleo, who has held Providence College season tickets since 1958, is ending his 66-year run as he and longtime companion Rachel Puleo recall landmark moments like the Blizzard of ’78 game and the school’s historic Final Four appearances—marking the close of a cherished era in Friars basketball.  The Boston Globe
  • The Narragansett football team scored a game-winning touchdown against Smithfield in Week 8—this play secured a crucial win as their season continues.  The Providence Journal
  • Kevin McNamara previewed Rhode Island’s four Division I men’s basketball programs and explained that URI’s coach may face a contract buyout if his team does not climb into the upper half of the Atlantic 10—he predicted that Providence College could emerge as a bubble team for the NCAA tournament while Bryant and Brown work to solidify their chances. McNamara also noted that increased spending on rosters is raising concerns among athletic directors about how name, image and likeness will shape college hoops.  The Boston Globe
