COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NBC 10 is partnering with Shaw's and the Salvation Army for the 10 Cares Thanksgiving food drive and telethon to help families in Southern New England get dinner baskets. Shaw's will donate $40,000 for turkeys while stores take nonperishable food donations until Nov. 24 and the telethon will accept cash gifts on Nov. 13.  10 WJAR
  • Local organizations have stepped in as uncertainty over SNAP payments has left many Providence residents worried about their next grocery trip. A church event Saturday supported hundreds and food pantries — along with other pop-up sites — are being arranged to meet the increased need.  10 WJAR
  • Food pantries in Providence and Central Falls experienced long lines on Nov. 1 after SNAP benefits froze amid a federal government shutdown, leaving about 143,000 Rhode Islanders at risk of food shortages. Local judges ordered USDA authorities to use emergency reserve funds to keep benefits going+while officials made plans to support rising demand.  The Providence Journal
  • Scouting for Food — Rhode Island's largest food drive — collected donations yesterday as scouts from Narragansett Council picked up food from doorsteps in Rhode Island, southeast Massachusetts, and southeast Connecticut before delivering them to local drop off sites. The group hopes to exceed its 150,000-pound goal this year.  10 WJAR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire on November 1 displaced six adults and seven children from a three-family home on Whittier Avenue around 12:45 p.m.—flames reached the second floor, no one was injured, and authorities said the cause is under investigation.  ABC 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Apple Cinemas began operations at Providence Place mall on Saturday, replacing Showcase Cinemas which closed last Sunday, and the new theater plans upgrades including luxury recliners, an IMAX projection and sound system, a bowling lounge, trampoline park, and bar — renovations are expected to finish by winter.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rhode Island Comic Con will take place in Providence from Nov. 7 to 9 and will feature guest Marisa Tomei who will offer autographs and photos on Friday and Saturday. Wrestling stars Killer Cross and Scarlett Bordeaux and legend Ric Flair will join the event and Boston Red Sox mascots will appear on Sunday—though Nick Carter and Grant Gustin have been cancelled.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Prospect Medical Holdings filed a petition on Thursday to close Rhode Island's CharterCARE hospitals, Roger Williams and Fatima, after months of budget cuts and layoffs. A bankruptcy hearing on Tuesday will decide if the state takes over the hospitals and if about 2,000 healthcare workers will lose their jobs.  Go Local Prov
  • Make-A-Wish held a fundraising gala Saturday at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence—raising funds to grant wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. The event featured awards, speeches from fulfilled children, live and silent auctions, and honored longtime sponsor Amica with the Anchor Award with 370 attendees present.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Yesterday, high school soccer teams advanced in playoff quarterfinals at Fracassa Stadium and Tucker Field — North Kingstown won 2-1 in overtime, Toll Gate beat Middletown 3-2, Lincoln edged Cumberland on penalties, and Mt. Hope and Moses Brown won their matches. The semifinal games will take place at Rhode Island College later this week.  The Providence Journal
  • La Salle girls tennis won its 12th straight state championship with a 4-1 win over Barrington on November 1 in Pawtucket — the perfect season was marked by strong singles and doubles performances. The team, led by a standout freshman at first singles, builds on a legacy of dominance under coach Tom Martin.  The Providence Journal
  • Prout girls tennis won the Division II championship at Slater Park on Saturday—avenging last year’s loss with a 4 to 0 sweep over Rogers and finishing an undefeated season. The Crusaders celebrated their seventh title as new players and returning talents merged to deliver a dominant performance.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence Country Day and St. Raphael girls tennis players joined their teams to form the Holy Warriors and won the 2025 Division III championship with a 4-0 victory over Coventry on November 1 at Slater Park—overcoming early doubts about combining teams. Senior Mays Miller and freshman Isla Blecker led key singles matches that helped seal the win—bringing the new co-op closer together.  The Providence Journal
