EDUCATION NEWS

  • Smithfield schools superintendent Dawn Bartz is on administrative leave as the district investigates its response to a hazing incident that involved antisemitic slurs against a Jewish football player—Chairman Richard Iannitelli confirmed that Lisa Odom‑Villella will serve as acting superintendent while the Rhode Island Attorney General reviews the case under civil law.  The Providence Journal
  • On November 5, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke with Brown President Christina H. Paxson about U.S. foreign policy and research universities’ role in protecting democracy. She stressed that leaders must face global challenges while urging students to enter public service—drawing on lessons from her long career in diplomacy.  Brown University
  • Brown University opened the new Galen V. Henderson Admission Welcome Center at Manning Hall on Nov. 3 to offer visitors interactive displays, digital features and artwork that show campus life—bringing a fresh start to admission tours—and honor Dr. Henderson's legacy.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mystic Aquarium staff on Tuesday released two juvenile gray seals—Victor and Zuma—at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown after two months of treatment for severe hind flipper injuries incurred on Block Island. The seals underwent partial digit amputations and other medical care that allowed them to regain full swimming ability.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Peter Neronha is negotiating with Prospect Medical to keep Roger Williams Medical Center—Providence and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital—North Providence open until December while buyers such as Centurion or Prime Healthcare finish financing. He seeks extra time to prevent the hospitals' closure and protect local jobs.  Rhode Island PBS
  • At Brown University on Wednesday, Condoleezza Rice said Vladimir Putin is the only person who can stop the war in Ukraine and urged an end to the conflict while expressing regret over the lives lost in the Iraq War. She also warned that the U.S. must lead the race against China in AI to avoid future challenges—stressing that policy changes are needed.  The Boston Globe
  • On Tuesday, the Providence City Council Committee on Finance voted to advance the lease of the WaterFire Arts Center back to WaterFire Providence after the council approved the $3.75 million purchase of the building — the lease requires WaterFire to host eight full lightings and five partial lightings annually, cover maintenance costs, and allows the city to reclaim the property if needed. The final approval of the plan will come later this month.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rhode Island Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn accepted an offer from the University of Massachusetts to become their new senior deputy athletic director—he will oversee the football program and serve as chief administrative officer. Bjorn, a Minutemen football alum, spent the last 18 years with the Rams and will bring his experience to his new role.  The Providence Journal
  • North Kingstown and East Providence girls volleyball teams won Tuesday’s semifinal matches at Rhode Island College’s Murray Center to secure their spot in the Division I state championship on Saturday, November 8. North Kingstown swept Classical 25-3, 25-11, 25-17 while East Providence beat La Salle 3-1, setting the stage for a historic contest as both teams aim to match records and seek redemption.  The Providence Journal
  • North Kingstown beat Lincoln 3-0 and La Salle edged Mt. Hope 1-0 on Nov. 4 at Rhode Island College to secure their spots in the Division I girls soccer final—both teams will meet Saturday at RIC as North Kingstown chases its fourth title in five years and La Salle aims to win its first final since 2020.  The Providence Journal
