  • Providence high schoolers Evan Perez and Adrian Bautista won first place in the National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge for their startup Color Your Life—which uses AI to turn family photos into personalized coloring books—and they will scale the service later this year.  Rhode Island PBS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Netflix filmed scenes for its movie 'The Mosquito Bowl' at Brown Stadium in Providence on Wednesday, Nov. 12 to capture a World War II football game played on Guadalcanal by former college stars. Crews used period costumes and vintage automobiles — all set up with care — to recreate the era for the film.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Education released the annual report cards for every public school today—nineteen schools earned five-star ratings as part of federal accountability requirements.  The Boston Globe

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Islanders had a chance to see the northern lights on November 12 when a severe G4 geomagnetic storm placed the state in the predicted view line—NOAA’s update suggested the aurora could be even more visible than on November 11.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Historic Market Square between the Market House and RISD Auditorium has become a daily parking lot for RISD maintenance vehicles, and a RISD spokesperson said the area is city property where no parking is allowed — the misuse has continued for months.  Go Local Prov

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island Department of Health announced that ByHeart Inc. has recalled all ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula products because a multistate infant botulism outbreak has been linked to multiple product lots—parents and caregivers are urged to stop using the formula and seek prompt care if infants show symptoms.  ABC 6
  • Union leaders say the state has interfered with Centurion’s deal to buy Fatima and Roger Williams hospitals, raising fears that the hospitals might close and leave people without care. State officials say they are talking with Prime Healthcare — a back-up plan to keep the hospitals open if the deal does not finish.  The Boston Globe

SPORTS NEWS

  • Providence Friars beat Penn 106—81 on Tuesday night at Amica Mutual Pavilion in a game that marked their best consecutive scoring run in nearly 20 years, while coach Kim English said the team must boost its defense with more steals and defensive rebounds. Corey Floyd Jr. led with 20 points and Ryan Mela recorded a double-double before a crowd of 9,472, with the team preparing for a road game against Colorado on Friday.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island's men’s basketball team beat Stonehill 80-57 at the Ryan Center on Nov. 11 (Jonah Hinton and Tyler Cochran scored 16 points each), and coach Archie Miller praised the strong defense after a Tulsa loss last week. Separately, athletic director Thorr Bjorn left for a new role at UMass and Miller said the team will adjust as the season continues.  The Providence Journal
