CULTURE NEWS

  • Chad A. Verdi—a Rhode Island film producer—is teaming with Leonardo DiCaprio to make a documentary called 'Oz' that will show how the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz was made. The film will start filming in June 2026 and use unseen footage as part of their fourth collaboration.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Rhode Island teachers were honored with the 2025 RI STEAM Educator Award on November 19 — Erin Giuliano of Park Elementary in Warwick, Christopher Colson of Goff Middle School in Pawtucket, and Tiffany Risch of Coventry High School received a $1,000 classroom grant and a $500 personal award to support innovative STEAM teaching.  Go Local Prov

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island’s Office of Veterans Services and Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island hosted a Veterans Café at the East Providence Senior Center on Wednesday, November 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.—veterans received free meals and help filing claims—and the next session will be held on December 17 at the Southside Cultural Center in Providence.  10 WJAR
  • Rhode Island Energy withdrew its proposal to offer customers $75 monthly relief credits for January through March 2026 and 2027 after the approval deadline lapsed in a Public Utilities Commission meeting on Wednesday—its representative said the company will pursue other ways to lower energy costs for the coming winter.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown University researchers found that smoking cannabis with THC reduced alcohol use in a controlled lab trial in Providence. Participants who smoked lower and higher THC doses drank 19 percent and 27 percent less alcohol than those who smoked a placebo, but further research is needed to see if the effect holds outside the lab.  Brown University

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Elton Castee bought the underlying mortgage for the haunted Burrillville property on Oct. 8 while paranormal investigator Jason Hawes began raising nearly $315,000 to help purchase the home—efforts that continue despite the deed remaining with Jacqueline Nuñez. The house’s future will change if Nuñez signs over the deed or the property is re-auctioned.  The Boston Globe

  • Roger Federer, a 20-time major champion, will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame next summer in Newport— the celebration set for Aug 27-29 will honor broadcast journalist Mary Carillo, who is inducted via the Contributor Category. Tickets for the event will go on sale Feb 11.  The Providence Journal
  • The Providence Friars overcame a rough first half to beat UNH 98 to 66 on Nov. 18th at Amica Mutual Pavilion. Jason Edwards led with 25 points as the team closed the first half on a 6 to 0 run and made 10 straight shots out of the locker room — fueling a strong home comeback.  The Providence Journal
