ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two families with four adults and six children were forced to leave a Pawtucket multi-family home on Monday after a kitchen fire broke out on the second floor—firefighters rescued a dog while working to contain the blaze as officials investigate its cause.  ABC 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Newport Creamery at Garden City will close December 28 when its lease is not renewed—its owners said they are saddened to leave after over 60 years of service. All Garden City employees will be offered jobs at other company locations.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Target 12 launched a four-part series called 'The Last Don of Providence' on its WPRI 12+ streaming app + the show tells the story of Luigi 'Baby Shacks' Manocchio, a mob figure who died last year at 97. New episodes will be released each Monday over the next month.  The Boston Globe
  • North Smithfield has a rich history from its early water-powered mills to landmarks like Wright’s Dairy Farm and Blackstone Gorge—a state park with rocky cliffs and an 80 foot waterfall view—that illustrate its role in America’s industrial past.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chanelle Dupuis, a Brown doctoral candidate, uses her research in French studies to explore the science of smell—linking literature, neuroscience and history to show how odors influence memory and health. She teaches undergraduate courses and will host a conference in February to bring experts together on the subject.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wild turkeys, once extinct in local areas, were reintroduced when state officials used a cannon net to capture birds from other states and release them in Rhode Island in the 1980s—since then the birds have steadily repopulated local woodlands.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island State Fire Marshal Timothy P. McLaughlin warned that Thanksgiving is the busiest day for home cooking fires and told families to stay in the kitchen while keeping children away from hot surfaces. He said that if turkeys are deep-fried, the bird must be completely thawed and dry, fried outdoors away from combustibles, and that all smoke alarms be checked — steps meant to help prevent a 388% rise in fires.  The Providence Journal
