BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rusty's Bar and Grille in Middletown closed after nearly 80 years when its last drink was served over the weekend — bands played final tunes as the aging venue ended operations. Owner Chuck Dings said the building needed replacement after repeated redevelopment denials and remains uncertain about his next move.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Family announced that Antone 'Chubby' Tavares of the Grammy Award winning Tavares group died; he was known for songs like 'Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel' and grew up in Providence and New Bedford + his group was inducted into the Cape Verdean Heritage hall of fame in 2006.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Foundation will present its plan to fix school funding on Dec. 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at CIC Providence on Dyer Street—moderated by Dan McGowan and Steph Machado and featuring experts including David Cicilline, Nora Gordon, and John Papay.  The Boston Globe
  • On December 1st, Rhode Island allocated over $457,000 in federal funds to 12 local education agencies to help students experiencing homelessness—money provided under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act that will support tutoring, technology access and workforce training in communities like Central Falls and Middletown.  Go Local Prov

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm is affecting New England today, with Providence seeing a few snowflakes shortly after sunrise before a quick change to rain—washing away any buildup and bringing gusty winds into the evening. The storm moves in from the southwest, shifting the rain field to most areas this afternoon.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Providence Fire Department has put two older rescue trucks into service at the Washington Street station—each working 10-hour shifts on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to handle growing hospital transport needs and reduce reliance on mutual aid.  The Providence Journal
  • The City of Providence closed Maple Avenue and Pine Avenue in Roger Williams Park last Monday for boardwalk construction and will keep them closed for about 4—6 weeks to divert traffic. The project will build a 300-foot timber boardwalk with a fishing overlook and an accessible boat ramp.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Heart Association warns adults over 45 and those with heart conditions to use caution when shoveling snow—residents are advised to use ergonomic tools, take frequent breaks, and lift properly as inclement weather may soon bring heavy snow.  The Providence Journal
  • The FDA recalled two Choceur branded holiday bark candy products sold at Aldi after a packaging error resulted in undeclared allergens that may trigger life-threatening allergic reactions—consumers are urged to discard any such products.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Providence readers can now vote for the Longplex Athlete of the Week for Thanksgiving football, with five nominees including Cardoso, Gavis, Husereau, Parent, and Wray. Voting opens at 9 a.m. on Monday and runs until Friday—once the votes are tallied, the winner will be named next week.  The Providence Journal
