COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roger Williams Park Zoo said Fernando, the 11-year-old giant otter with worsening arthritis, was euthanized Wednesday + his brother Romo is now under close watch as he adjusts to life without him.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brown University's Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice is highlighting its 'Unfinished Conversations' oral history project through two exhibitions. One is on view at the Instituto Pretos Novos in Rio until Dec. 15, and an adapted version is at Brown until Dec. 12.  Brown University
  • The touring circus musical 'Water for Elephants' plays at the Providence Performing Arts Center from Dec. 2 to Dec. 7, offering acrobatic stunts and musical storytelling by Robert Tully and Zachary Keller. Tickets cost $54 to $119 at the box office.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University provided Providence with $41 million in support during FY25 (including $11.1 million in voluntary payments and $30.2 million in contributions to kindergarten through 12 education, nonprofits, and research partnerships) as the university boosted local community programs with nearly 70,000 volunteer hours and investments in public services.  Brown University
  • Students at Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls work on homework and enjoy free tutoring + soccer time in Project Goal, an after-school program that boosts grades and behavior. The initiative has expanded to other local communities and helps kids earn playtime.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Joseph M. McNamara has proposed a statewide zero-tolerance hazing policy for schools after high-profile incidents in Newport and Smithfield, with measures that could include team suspensions or season cancellations. The bill will be formally submitted in early January, and details are being finalized by the Rhode Island Department of Education + the Interscholastic League.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Great Lakes Cheese Co Inc. voluntarily recalled over 200,000 cases of shredded cheese in early October for potential metal fragments, and the recall is ongoing; according to the FDA, the recalled cheese sold at Aldi + Walmart has not reached local stores.  The Providence Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Providence stargazers can enjoy two meteor showers this December. The Geminids begin today and peak Dec.13-14 while the Ursids follow Dec.17-26 (viewers are advised to pick dark spots for best viewing).  The Providence Journal

  • URI defeated Brown 66-56 at the Ryan Center in Kingston on Dec. 3 — their first win since Nov. 2018 — with strong defense and controlled rebounds in front of 3,575 fans.  The Providence Journal
