COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rhode Island Convention Center unveiled its new $3.5 million bar (The Exchange) on Wednesday, offering a fresh venue for convention guests and local fans. Governor Dan McKee held a press conference there to promote Saturday’s University of Rhode Island vs. Providence College basketball rivalry game.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • Across RI, holiday markets are underway and upcoming through Dec. 23, offering unique gifts and festive experiences for shoppers (including crafts, food, and live music). Today features the Downtown Providence Holiday Market, while other events in Jamestown, Newport, Pawtucket, and Middletown add to the celebration.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence has a busy weekend of local arts and entertainment. La Cuesta Magica starts today at Teatro ECAS while Nova One headlines City Hall tomorrow — the Bristol Christmas Festival and folk music fundraiser occur Dec. 6-7, and a talk on news media is set for Dec. 10 in Pawtucket.  Rhode Island PBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Peter Howitt, the 2025 Nobel laureate from Brown, discussed his research on creative destruction (the process where new innovations replace old methods) and his long partnership with Philippe Aghion during a local Q&A. He said that open competition will continue to drive change in economic policy.  Brown University
  • Brown University will host its annual Midyear Completion Celebration tomorrow, Dec. 6, on College Hill to honor .5ers finishing their degree requirements this month. Speakers Suhaila Hashimi and Vanya Noel will share stories of resilience and renewal during the event.  Brown University
  • Brown’s School of Public Health will see Dean Dr. Ashish K. Jha depart on Dec. 31 to focus on a new initiative for pandemic and biosecurity threats – enrollment has reached a record high and interim dean Francesca L. HEALTH NEWS

  • Prime Healthcare withdrew its bid for Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, leaving the Centurion Foundation as the only suitor. Centurion will appear in bankruptcy court today to update on its financing as closing the hospitals could overwhelm emergency departments.  The Boston Globe
  • Open enrollment for health insurance in Providence continues until Jan. 31. Consumers can visit HealthSourceRI+ for guidance on choosing plans as pandemic-era subsidies end and costs change.  The Providence Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Rhode Island steakhouses offer a range of dining experiences from Providence to Newport. Diners can sample wagyu and pork options and enjoy quality meals that make the trip worthwhile.  The Providence Journal
  • Bartender Justin Brody won the cocktail competition at Mystic Cocktail Classic with his award-winning Bajan Daydream. Now at Juniper, he plans to open a new bar in 2026 that will feature tropical cocktails, sustainability, and a vast rum collection.  The Boston Globe
