COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Four grocery stores remain in the contest to name RI's best, with voters casting ballots until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14 (final-round voting starts Monday, Dec. 15).  The Providence Journal
  • Today, the ELISHA project will distribute 2,000 coats and winter essentials to local police for immediate distribution to veterans and others in need - items will come from its headquarters at 100 Main Street in Pawtucket between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.  The Providence Journal
  • Newport’s noise camera program, launched in 2024 to curb disturbances and boost revenue, has inspired a pilot in Providence with calls for other cities to follow suit. Local officials say the system will improve community safety and help reduce noise that harms health (including sleep and heart issues).  The Boston Globe

  • Trader Joe’s has introduced a new deep pine green tote bag with a holiday theme available at two local stores + the standard tote measures about 20 inches wide and 14 inches tall and costs $3.99, expected to attract eager shoppers.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 20th Century Studios film Ella McCay, shot in various Rhode Island spots, will appear in local theaters on Thursday, Dec. 11 for early screenings (official release is Dec. 12) as directed by James L. Brooks and starring Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Woody Harrelson.  The Providence Journal
  • Wilbury Theatre’s digital-age musical Octet premieres at the WaterFire Arts Center church basement, where eight characters share their struggles with online addictions through a capella performances, and the play runs through Dec. 21 (tickets range from $18 to $55).  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University has named its Center for Career Exploration after receiving a generous gift from Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch. The donation, announced Dec. 4, expands career advising and internships while strengthening student ties with local community programs.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Transportation started construction today to expand Kingston Station's parking lot & add 129 spaces to raise the total to 344. Work runs weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the new spaces are expected by summer.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown University physician-scientist Dr. Martin Taylor led a multi-institution study that found blocking only the mTORC2 complex could cut cancer growth signals & open a path for drugs that avoid triggering cancer cell survival, with results published in Science on Dec. 9.  Brown University
