CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Rice City got its name in 1796 when tavern owner Samuel Rice broke a bottle of rum on his tavern roof to mark a new stagecoach stop near Providence; the village declined with the railroad’s arrival, but its original Rice Tavern still stands — a cherished local landmark. The Providence Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Dan McKee signed legislation in August that will raise Rhode Island’s minimum wage from $15 to $16 per hour starting in 2026 (with a $1 increase planned for 2027) to benefit about 50,000 minimum-wage workers. The Providence Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Portsmouth boys hockey beat Lincoln 7-1 on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Rhode Island Sports Center, with standout plays from goalie Ben Humm, who made 33 saves, and freshman Kane Brule scoring a hat trick. Providence New Year’s Eve Celebration and Illuminate PVD Fireworks Display
The Providence Tourism Council, the City of Providence, and Mayor Brett P. Smiley are thrilled to announce the 3rd annual citywide New Year's Eve celebration with the Illuminate PVD Fireworks at the 195 District Park and the Michael Van Leesten Pedestrian Bridge on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Featuring local musicians, dance performances, a 360-degree photo booth, and a DJ spinning tunes all night, the party, fueled by a selection of food trucks and a tented beverage garden, will groove right up to the fireworks display at 8:30 PM.
