COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence will host its 3rd Annual New Year's Eve Celebration and Illuminate PVD: Fireworks Display today at 195 District Park, where events begin at 5 p.m. with WaterFire braziers lighting the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Pedestrian Bridge between 5:30 and 9 p.m., and fireworks launching at 8:30 p.m.  10 WJAR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Banana Republic at Providence Place mall will close after the company notified the store, the manager said. The other store in Garden City will continue operating.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • In Pawtucket, people from The Arc of Blackstone Valley Flying Shuttles performed original poetry at a monthly event celebrating creativity and inclusion. The event, organized by Sadey Fournier, offered artists with developmental disabilities a space to share their work + inspire community spirit.  10 WJAR
  • Providence hosts free New Year’s Eve fireworks today with Illuminate PVD at District Park from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring live music, food trucks, and a waterfire display — while Warwick holds a 3-to-6 p.m. event at Rocky Point Park with festive music and giveaways.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University's interim vice president for public safety, Hugh T. Clements Jr., announced enhanced security measures that will roll out across campus starting soon and extending into Spring 2026. The plan includes increased officer presence, upgraded access control, and new technology to help rebuild trust.  Brown University
  • Brown University will upgrade campus security with extra cameras at the Barus and Holley engineering and physics building plus improved access systems and emergency devices; the projects will be completed by Jan. 21 under the guidance of its incoming vice president of public safety.  The Boston Globe
  • Brown University’s interim Vice President for Public Safety, a former Providence police chief, announced enhanced campus safety measures that include new card access systems, expanded blue light phones + security cameras, and active shooter training ahead of the spring semester starting Jan. 21.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Brown Medicine kidney doctor deported in March is appealing an October ruling at Federal Appeals Court in Boston that banned her from entering the US for five years. She, who held a valid H-1B visa and worked at Rhode Island Hospital, seeks to reverse the decision.  Rhode Island PBS

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The former Lincoln Memorial School has been converted into 26 income-restricted housing units — including a three-story addition adding nine units — that offer studios to 2-bedrooms for those earning up to 80% of the area median income. Updates include granite countertops and repurposed classrooms while preserving historic details.  The Providence Journal
  • Two developers converted the former Lincoln Memorial School into income-restricted apartments using a mix of renovations and new additions; the project brings affordable housing to a cherished community landmark.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The URI men’s basketball coach remains the highest-paid state worker among the top 10 earners, which include five URI employees, three corrections officers, and two state doctors. Officials said his pay aligns with Atlantic 10 trends as the men’s team holds a 9-4 record.  The Boston Globe
